METABOOK, a plinth-mounted silk-screened book sculpture;‘10 FLAGS silk-screens extracted from METABOOK form a wall-based installation and a spoken word performance by guest artist Douglas Park who will embody the Library’s body of knowledge as a living Encyclopedia. The man who became a book!

Illustrators win chance to show work at LBF

The London Book Fair can be a rather depressing experience for creative types – what with all those partition walls and business-types doing business-type things – so it’s nice to see the artistic side of books making a bigger appearance this year. The Bookseller today published the final list of ten illustrators who have won a place to show their work at the LBF. They include Emma McCann (Fantastic Mr Fox, pictured), Eric Freeberg (Goldilocks) and Jennifer Miles (Happy Endings). Read more…

London Book Fair 2010 here we come

artypeeps_troubadour_jonthan_perugia_rupert_jessopLast Wednesday (22 April) Artypeeps hosted a book design, illustration and photography exhibition at the Troubadour Gallery in Earls Court. This was a one-day event to coincide with the London Book Fair and it was the first exhibition by the Artypeeps collective.

The response from guests and visitors was overwhelmingly positive, with many people commenting on how refreshing it was to see the artistic side of book publishing gain more prominence.

We plan to repeat the exhibition next year but, in the meantime, stay tuned for details of the next Artypeeps event.

Artypeeps Official Launch

The rules were there to be brokenLaughter, competition, heckling, cheating, mild hysteria…

The Artypeeps ArtyQuiz had all the ingredients of a successful launch party. The spectacularly ambient Garrison pub in London played host to a thoroughly arty crowd, with some of London publishing’s biggest talents in attendance. It was a hilarious night, chock full of that warm, enthusiastic buzz that only creative types can emit.

Now that Artypeeps is officially off the ground we already have our sights on 2009 when we’ll focus on becoming the primary force in creative services and events for the book publishing industry. Our objectives for next year are split into three categories:

PROJECT MANAGEMENT & PACKAGING
The Artypeeps members and associates are some of the most experienced project managers, designers, photographers and writers in the book business. We can produce books from manuscript through to printed books delivered into the warehouse on time and on budget. Contact us via the website to discuss your project.

PUBLISHING
Artypeeps will begin a publishing program in 2009 under the Curved House Press imprint. We are now on the hunt for talented artists and writers to submit work for an exciting collaborative publishing project – All the Ways to Say ‘I Love You’. More details will go up on the artypeeps website on 10th December. If you want to know more in the meantime you can Contact us through the website.

EVENTS
Plans are already simmering away for the program of events in 2009, including another ArtyQuiz in the first half of the year. Keep an eye on the website for details and dates. In addition, our members are actively teaching and talking and have lectured on book design, typography, book production, printing/manufacture, getting into  publishing and self-publishing. We are always happy to talk anyone’s head off, so contact us if you are looking  for  vibrant, enthusiastic and interesting speakers.

Artypeeps would like to say a huge thanks to our main sponsor of Tuesday’s event, Loudmouth, for their generous donation of the main raffle prize. And also thanks to illustrator Karoline Rerrie who donated lots of lovely prints and books for the winner, and to Howies for donating a t-shirt of the week.

And an even huger thanks to all the wonderful peeps who came along and made the official launch such a success.

A blog is born…

…and don’t it feel good.

After quietly launching the artypeeps website a little while ago ( artypeeps.co.uk ) the proverbial “we” have worked through a list of enhancements and, somewhere near the bottom of the list, is this blog. (Err, that’s not to say a blog isn’t important but there were some fundamental things that needed to come first). So today we are rejoicing not only the fact that we now have a blogging voice, but also that we’re near the end of the ‘to do’ list that will ensure Artypeeps has a happy home online.

The first post should really be a bit of an explanation of who we are and what we do, but all ye readers will probably doze off after paragraph one, so here’s a brief synopsis:

Artypeeps.co.uk is the one-stop-shop for anything to do with the creative side of book and print publishing. We are both a website and a festering pot of enthusiasm.

There we go. That’ll do. If you’d like to know more go to the FAQs section of the Artypeeps Website.

Stay with me now, there are a few to thank for helping Artypeeps come alive: to the first members whose amazing talents and award-winning work inspired the idea in the first place (they all have their own profiles on the site where you can view their work, download CVs and portfolios and contact them); to the RapidWeaver community (and also to Steve) for technical guidance and SEO advice (what a quandry of confusion that is) to the amazingly clever Yael Biran from Red Sheep who did the animation for the homepage and gave the site its dancing shoes.

That’s it for housekeeping. Now we’re off to gather juice for future blog posts which will be anything to do with books, book publishing, art, design, illustration, photography and anything else arty and creative
