Author Website: Jasmine Richards

We are thrilled to be working with debut children’s author Jasmine Richards on her new website. The site – www.jasminerichards.com will be up and running in the next couple of months, in time for the release of Jasmine’s first novel, The Book of Wonders. Here’s a sneak peak:

Pathways by Nicholas Rudd-Jones and David Stewart

Pathways: Journeys along Britain’s history byways, from pilgrimage routes to smuggler’s trails is another meaty project for Guardian Books. Artypeeps managed the production and proofreading from manuscript to final files while the design and layout was done by Two Associates and the excellent maps are by Darren Bennett. This was a big book with full colour integrated images throughout and various components in the text design that needed careful attention. Lots of hard work but a really fabulous job done by everyone involved (not least the authors!). You can get hold of it from Guardian Books.

Cyclebabble: Bloggers on Biking by Guardian Books

cyclebabble guardian books james randerson peter walkerCyclebabble is out now – get on yer bikes, peeps. We managed the typesetting/layout and proofread this one for Guardian Books and can therefore say with a little bit of authority (just a little bit) that it’s a groovy read and well worth the measly £5.99 asking price. Happy peddling!

CILIP Postcards and Posters

The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals asked us to produce an eye-catching A6 postcard and A3 poster to promote their careers campaign. This was just around the time that David McCandless published his book Information is Beautiful so that inspired the copy:

Some say information is beautiful
Some say information is power
We say information is the future
Your future

We coupled this with a groovy spiral design by Jim Smith and produced both poster and postcard in colour and black and white. We’re pretty happy with it – hope the kids like it!

Revamping Guardian Style

Guardian StyleWe have been really lucky to have the opportunity to revamp the text design of the Guardian Style book. Our challenge was to modernise the design, make it clean and accessible, hit the target page extent and ensure the book is typeset, proofread and ready for printing by the deadline. It was hugely rewarding to work with David Marsh and Amelia Hodsdon, Production Editors at the Guardian and the keepers of the newspaper’s house style. We’re really pleased with the outcome. The project was overseen by Kristen Harrison, with Nicky Barneby doing the text design and David and Amelia in charge of editorial. The cover design is by O B Roberts and was commissioned separately.

Guardian University Guide 2011, edited by Kristen Harrison

Guardian University GuideThe Guardian University Guide is probably the most labour-intensive book we’ve produced to date. But, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Ain’t that how it goes?

This year we were in charge of the text while Two Associates designed the cover. Our task involved updating all of the core details – like university application submission dates, fees and statistics; coordinating the updates of over a hundred university profiles (which means dealing with each and every press office and tracking and recording their responses); updating the tables and statistics; sourcing hundreds of student and teacher quotations to accompany the text; marking up the manuscript; typesetting (thanks Nicky and Dennis) and doing a final proofread.  All of this was done in parallel with the team at Guardian Online (Alice Woolley and Katie Shimmon especially) who produce the online version, and with Matt Hiely-Rayner who provides the statistical information.

To add one further challenge, all this has to be done in a small window to ensure the book is up-to-date when it’s  published and this year the general election was held right in the middle of that window. I think we can probably withstand any level of editorial complexity after the experience.

Moving On Up… in English, Russian, Arabic, Urdu, Bengali and Turkish

It’s not every day that we find ourselves producing a book in six languages but that, my friends, is what we are doing. Moving on Up: A Guide to Living in Your Own Home is a 96pp full-colour book for Eaves Housing. It’s aimed at women who are embarking on the challenge of living independently after having been trafficked in to the UK or having suffered other forms of abuse and/or violence.

Eaves wanted to make the book friendly, accessible and really easy to follow, so chief text designer Nicky Barneby created a lovely, bright design. After commissioning the translations, trusty typesetter Dennis laid out the Russian and Arabic versions. They each had their own challenges -not least the fact that Arabic reads with the spine on the right (the opposite to an English text) so the output of files for the printer had to be carefully managed. We also supplied the stock images and had the books printed here in the UK.

So the English, Russian and Arabic are all done and Urdu, Bengali and Turkish are in production. Contact us if you think we can help with your book projects. And for more info about Eaves see their website or search online to find a wealth of truly invaluable work they are doing.

Legal Guidelines for Eaves Housing in London

Rights and Recourse, Eaves Housing for WomenWe’ve just finished a new publication for Eaves Housing in London and, well, we’re rather proud of it.  A 112-page set of legal guidelines may not be overwhelmingly exciting at first glance, but this was produced on a massively short (are oxymorons allowed here?) timescale and with a tight budget, so the result is something to celebrate .
The text was printed full colour on 100gsm offset while cover and spine were printed and inserted into  plain white A5 ringbinders. The smaller format ringbinder works well for these practical, reference-style books because it is less likely to get lost in the sea of A4 ringbinders that clutter a busy office. It’s still a standard book size too, so it sits comortably on any bookshelf.
We’ll upload the second book in a future post.
Eaves Housing do some truly amazing work for vulnerable women in the UK, not least running the POPPY project that provides housing and support for women who have been trafficked into prostitution. Read more about Eaves and make a small (or large!) donation to support their work.

CILIP Brochure and Mailing

Tag clouds are all the rage so we went down that route for this CILIP brochure. Nicky Barneby did the design and Artypeeps also managed the printing and mailing to a bulk of recipients in the UK.
